NSCC Now Interview

Earlier this summer, I was interviewed by NSCC Now, an online community that's focused on the successes and growth of NSCC students. Our graphic design class worked on a literacy fundraiser for our local library and adult learning program this spring. Adult literacy is a huge concern in Cape Breton, and this fact from the Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton is quite startling:

In the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, over 44% of adults do not have the necessary literacy skills that they need to meet the demands of today's society.

The library system and adult learning program launched a fundraising campaign to raise funds for their efforts, targeting local businesses and asked our class to use our "design magic" to create eye-catching designs. Once NSCC Now caught word of the class' efforts to raise awareness, they were eager to share our story with our fellow NSCC students as well as the outside community. To learn more, here's the NSCC Now link to the article for your reading pleasure. :)

How we do Summer, Part I

We take quiet evening drives
We watch the sun set
We visit our friends' farm

We eat breakfast on the waterfront
We have lunch at the new local food truck
We read great books
We take walks on the beach

We watch track and field meets
We celebrate our first tomato of the season
We smell our fresh herbs
... and we soak up the sun on our beautiful island.

That's how we do summer 'round here.

(Oh, and we also spend too much money at thrift stores, eat too many cones of ice cream, feel sad and/or lonely and all of those other not so fun things. But we tend to skip the photo taking of the not so pleasurable moments. I'm sure you understand.)

Happy Tuesday!

Tap, tap, tap! This thing still on?

Bloggity, bloggity, blog. Hi, my name is Katie and I haven't blogged in three months. Three months! Time to wipe the dust off of Polka Dot Soup, me thinks.

Where to begin? I had a busy, busy summer - I started a new job once school finished for the year. I worked at a fun little local deli with a fantastic group of women and laughed my sides sore some days. Long work hours and the desire to spend any free time with my husband, family and friends left little time for the internet world. Before summer began, I made the decision to push the online/computer world to the side for several months, and that included graphic design work, blogging, blog reading and social media. I feel so refreshed, and, if I'm going to be honest, I loved every minute. We get so tied to the electronic world. I know I'll be spending 40+ hours in front of my screen every week once school (school!) begins, and this summer confirmed something that I've been struggling with putting into words: pursuing activities other than the online world makes me a happier person. I'd much rather be in my kitchen trying out a new recipe than pinning yet another one to my food board, ya hear me?

Over the next few days, I hope to share photos of some of my summer adventures. I took my Nikon on some escapades, but for the most part, my favourite memories were captured with my cell phone. My iPhone sure takes better photos than the poor little flip phone I had until last fall :)

What about you? How was your summer? Do share!

Happy Monday!
